Descrizione

Misurano dai 2,6 ai 3,5 metri e il loro peso si aggira sui 400-450 kg. Le femmine sono di dimensioni inferiori.

Diffusione

Si ritrova nei mari artici e nell'Atlantico settentrionale, lo si osserva raramente nelle coste dell'Europa settentrionale. Viene chiamata «blueback» la pelliccia di colore azzurro dei giovani esemplari.
